Soft, thin, rough or cracked eggshells are costly. They reduce the number of saleable eggs and can be an early sign that something in the flock needs attention. But a weak shell does not automatically mean “add more calcium.” Feed balance, water, heat, flock age, stress, disease and egg handling can all play a part.

First: describe the problem properly

Keep a simple daily count. Record total eggs, cracked or soft-shelled eggs, unusual shapes, feed used, water interruptions, temperature or heat signs, mortality and any drop in lay. One odd egg is not the same as a sudden flock-wide change.

  • Thin or soft shells: often point to a nutrition, feed-intake, heat, water or flock-health problem.
  • Rough, ridged or misshapen shells: can appear after stress or disease, but shell shape alone cannot confirm a diagnosis.
  • Cracked eggs with otherwise normal shells: may be a collection, nest, cage, transport or handling problem.

Why eggshell quality falls

1. The layer feed is incomplete, poorly mixed or poorly used

Shell formation depends on more than calcium. The hen also needs a properly balanced layer ration, including usable phosphorus and vitamin D, so she can absorb and use minerals. The form of calcium matters too: research in Nigeria has examined calcium source and particle size because they can affect shell quality. Do not replace a balanced layer ration with limestone, oyster shell or an improvised mineral mix on its own.

2. Hens are eating less than usual

A good feed on paper will not help if birds are not eating enough. Heat, overcrowding, disease, stale feed, feeder competition and sudden changes in feed can all reduce intake. Look at the feeders when the flock is active: are timid hens being pushed away, is feed caking, or are birds panting and standing away from feed?

3. Heat and water interruptions are reducing performance

During hot weather, hens commonly eat less and may drink more. Short water interruptions can also quickly affect feed intake and egg production. Provide cool, clean water, enough drinker space, shade and good airflow. Record the date and time of any interruption; it can explain a sudden change in the egg tray.

4. Flock age and laying stage

Shell problems can become more common as hens age. That does not mean poor shells should simply be accepted. Compare the current problem with the flock’s age, feed intake, laying pattern and management records before changing the ration.

5. Stress, disease or a sudden flock event

Transport, fighting, poor ventilation, crowding, fear, vaccination reactions and disease can affect shell quality. Some poultry diseases are associated with egg-production or shell changes, but weak shells alone do not diagnose any disease. If shell defects appear suddenly across the flock—especially with coughing, nasal discharge, swollen heads, diarrhoea, reduced appetite, mortality or a sharp fall in lay—contact a poultry veterinarian or animal-health authority promptly. A practical shell-quality investigation

  1. Count the defect: separate thin, soft, rough and broken shells for several days.
  2. Check water now: confirm every drinker works and birds can reach it.
  3. Watch the flock: look for heat stress, bullying, poor appetite, coughing, droppings changes or sick birds.
  4. Inspect the feed: confirm the correct layer ration, storage, freshness and even feeder access.
  5. Check the house: ventilation, stocking pressure, nests, sharp edges, collection frequency and transport can all increase breakage.
  6. Escalate early: a sudden, serious or worsening flock-wide problem needs professional help, not repeated supplement trials.

Preventing avoidable shell breakage

Collect eggs regularly, keep nests clean and dry, and handle trays gently. Separate breakage caused after laying from genuine shell weakness. This protects your records: otherwise a handling problem may be mistaken for a feeding problem.
